Writers Reading. That’s the name the Wilton Library gave our second appearance. My critique group, as I’ve previously mentioned, is blessed with the support of our library, which provides us with a meeting room every other week, regular speakers and workshops and, once a year, with a forum to preview our works in progress.
Tuesday night was the night. And we, the four writers, read to an audience of over 60 listeners packed into the Library’s Brubeck Room.
This year, not only did the Library promote us internally (flyers and emails), but also arranged for an article in the local paper. The turn out was gratifying, as was the response of laughs and sighs in all the right places.  And, of course, the applause.
Most writers have to wait until they’re published – and at least semi-famous – before they’re asked to read excerpts to the public, so we are doubly blessed to have this opportunity to “try out the material” and test our nerves in a familiar setting.
Gretchen read a hauntingly beautiful tale of youthful innocence, while Megan and Julie offered comic portrayals of real life. Julie’s saga of shopping at Costco had many heads nodding in fellowship, while her essay on weight gain during pregnancy  evoked peals of laughter.  Megan also debuted a more thought-provoking piece, foreshadowing a 9/11 clone in Chicago. And I, after innumerable rewrites, presented excerpts from a much improved Never Eat Fish on Monday. (Text below)
Gretchen, Megan, Julie and I agonized for weeks over what to read, then panicked at the prospect of reading and finally, when it was over, enjoyed that special feeling writers have when they know they’re actually doing what they love.

You can read my offering here.

Special thanks to Kathy Leeds and the Wilton Library for all their support!
